LUCIFUGUM - INVOLTATION | RELEASED: 2006 | LABEL: PROPAGANDA

Getting in touch with Lucifugum for the first time was after the publishing of the Antidogmatic EP four years ago. Before and afterwards there have been several releases, which passed me unfamiliarly. Now the new record Involtation is submitted to me and it's difficult to get to the bottom of the abysses, which have forced and driven Lucifugum.

Lucifugum isn't just one of the most productive bands, but one of the most wilful, too, and that just in manifold respects. Then, instead of expressing in their native language or even in English, the lyrics get written in Russian, so Russian is perfectly just icing to Lucifugum's demand. Ukrainian is felt to be too lovely and soft for the band, English as too simple. Unfortunately, caused by this language barrier, it's impossible to be engaged in with those satanic and misanthropic thoughts. Not only the philosophical and ideological view is interesting, but the musical creativeness.

As already mentioned, Lucifugum is very individual and therewith also independent. These eight Russian titles of Involtation can be roughly outlined as raw and harsh. It cannot be spoken of a real catching, then extremely many variables exist as well rhythmically as melodically. The rhythmical repertoire straightly covers the complete spectrum from sluggish over passages in average speed to brute. Besides all frequent changes are registered, which occur surprisingly at times. To the rhythmical versatility a likewise diversified guitar work is joining. The lead guitar is rarely silent; its melodic thread is unswervingly changing, whereby it has a very shrill sound. Catching structured riffs are very seldom. So it occasionally appears that single arrangements create moments of disharmony. This changeable and self-willed material leads sporadically to heavy access to the music. But this perfectly fits Lucifugum and this record.

Involtation is despite this abundance of changes and rough melody leading a very minimalist Black Metal, with which Lucifugum extremely delimitates from other bands. Without doubt, Involtation will give some people a headache, but this should surely be the sense of its creators, so Lucifugum regard their music as a poison, that has to be spread over.
